Plastic or glass? How to choose the right container
Glass offers a total barrier and a perception of higher value; plastic packaging weighs about ten times less, does not break in transit, meaningfully lowers freight cost and loss, and in Mexico is recycled intensively. The right choice depends on your product, your sales channel and your logistics.

We distribute plastic packaging — PET, HDPE, PP and laminate — and we do not sell glass. That is exactly why this page states plainly where glass is the better answer: if your product needs glass, switching would cost you more than it saves.
Where glass wins
- Absolute barrier. No gas transfer and no migration into the product. It is the standard for spirits, wine and long-life preserves.
- Very high temperatures. Sterilization and hot filling above the range most plastics tolerate.
- Perceived value. In premium categories the glass itself carries part of the brand message.
- Inert and reusable. Many refill cycles without the material degrading.
Where plastic wins
- Weight. Around one tenth of its glass equivalent, with a direct effect on freight — especially on long lanes or shipments to the United States.
- Breakage. Practically no loss from impact in transit, warehouse or shelf. Broken glass also means line stops and a workplace safety issue.
- Cost per unit and per pallet. Usually lower, and more units fit on the same pallet.
- Safety. Suitable for beaches, pools, gyms, hospitals, schools and events where glass is banned.
- Design. Shapes glass cannot produce, in clear, amber, white and black.
- Food grade. FDA 21 CFR documentation available for the model and resin you specify.
- Temperature. Some products in our catalog do withstand high temperatures — there are containers and closures designed for hot filling — so do not rule plastic out on that basis without asking us. Not every model supports it: we confirm the temperature range of the specific model when we quote.
Material matters as much as the format: PET for clarity and beverages, HDPE for chemicals and detergents, PP for closures, temperature and products that require it, and laminate for flexible packaging. The materials guide compares barrier, chemical resistance and service temperature for each resin.
Sustainability
Recycling glass means melting it at very high temperatures, which consumes far more energy than reprocessing PET, and in Mexico PET has a real collection and recycling chain behind it. When switching from glass to plastic makes sense
- Sauces and dressings sold through retail or food service.
- Honey and other viscous products where a squeeze format helps.
- Creams and cosmetics, where PET reads as clean and premium in clear or amber.
- Powdered supplements, where a wide jar and case pack economics matter.
- Cleaning products, a natural fit for HDPE.
- Beverages, where weight and breakage decide the freight bill.
- Anything shipped by parcel carrier or crossing into the United States.
When it does not
- Premium spirits, where glass is part of the product itself.
- Preserves that go through sterilization above what plastic tolerates.
- Any category where the customer buys the glass as much as the content — changing it would cost you more than the freight it saves.
If that is your case, stay with glass. We would rather tell you than sell you the wrong container.
Frequent questions
- Is plastic packaging food safe?
- Yes. Our standard PET, HDPE and PP containers are food grade, and FDA 21 CFR documentation is available on request for the specific model and resin you quote.
- How much does a plastic container weigh compared to glass?
- As a practical reference, a plastic container weighs roughly one tenth of its glass equivalent. That means less weight per pallet, lower freight cost and easier handling in the warehouse.
- Are there plastic containers that withstand hot filling?
- Yes. Part of our catalog — containers and closures, mostly PP — is designed for hot fill. Not the whole catalog supports it: we confirm the temperature range of the specific model when we quote, before you commit.
- Which is easier to recycle, PET or glass?
- Recycling glass requires melting it at very high temperatures, which consumes far more energy than reprocessing PET. In Mexico, PET also has a real, highly active collection and recycling chain, not just the theoretical possibility of being recycled.
